Description
RU-58841 is a non-steroidal antiandrogen (NSAA) developed for topical application in studies related to androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness) and acne. It selectively blocks dihydrotestosterone (DHT) from binding to androgen receptors in skin and hair follicles, without affecting systemic hormone levels.
Unlike systemic antiandrogens (e.g. finasteride), RU-58841 does not inhibit the production of DHT but instead locally antagonizes its action at the receptor level, making it a promising candidate for site-specific intervention with minimal endocrine disruption.
In vitro and in vivo models suggest RU-58841 may:
- Inhibit androgen receptor-mediated miniaturization of hair follicle structures, a process associated with androgen-dependent follicular regression
- Promote maintenance of follicular integrity and density in DHT-sensitive scalp tissue models
